Do you need to travel to Sydney for a first aid course?

Updated 2026-08-21 · First Aid Training Wollongong

No. If you are in the Illawarra you can complete the same nationally recognised units in Wollongong that you would sit in Sydney — same unit codes, same statement of attainment, same three-year currency. The certificate does not record which venue you attended, so the only real difference is the travel.

What you are actually comparing

A nationally recognised course is defined by its unit code, not its location. HLTAID011 Provide First Aid delivered in Wollongong and HLTAID011 delivered in the Sydney CBD are the same unit, assessed against the same requirements, and both produce a statement of attainment that is valid Australia-wide.

So the decision is not about the qualification. It is about a return trip up the M1 or the South Coast Line versus a course in the middle of town.

The travel maths

A Sydney CBD course means the trip each way plus the class itself. On the train from Wollongong that is a good part of a day once you add getting to and from the stations at both ends. Driving adds parking in the city on top.

Our Wollongong venue is at Suite 3, Level 1, 304 Crown Street — on Crown Street in the centre of town, a short walk from Wollongong station and the Crown Street Mall. For most people in the Illawarra that is the difference between a half-day and a whole day away from work.

Which unit you probably need

Most workplaces ask for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid, which runs three hours with us and includes the CPR unit, so you do not need to book both. If you work in education and care, HLTAID012 is the paediatric-focused unit and includes HLTAID011 and HLTAID009 within it. If you already hold a current first aid certificate and only need your annual CPR refresh, HLTAID009 is the 1.5-hour option.

If you are not sure which one your role calls for, check with your employer before booking — requirements vary by role and industry, and it is a short conversation that saves booking the wrong unit.

How the day works

There is a short online component you complete in your own time beforehand, then one practical session at the venue where you demonstrate the hands-on skills with a trainer. Your statement of attainment is issued the same day you attend.

You will need a Unique Student Identifier before a nationally recognised certificate can be issued. It is free, takes a few minutes, and you only ever need to do it once.

Who trains with us in Wollongong

Aged care and disability support workers, childcare educators, trades and industrial workers, surf and sporting clubs, and university students. Students travel to the Crown Street venue from across the Illawarra — Figtree, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal, Dapto, Shellharbour, Kiama, Port Kembla, Thirroul and Unanderra among them.

Common questions

Is a first aid certificate from Wollongong valid in Sydney?

Yes. Nationally recognised training is valid Australia-wide. The statement of attainment records the unit code, the completion date and the issuing RTO, not the venue.

How long does a first aid certificate last?

First aid certification is generally treated as current for three years, with a CPR refresher each year. Your employer or regulator may ask for something shorter, so check what applies to your role.

Can I do the whole course online?

No. The theory component is online, but the practical skills have to be demonstrated in person, so there is always one face-to-face session.
