First aid for Illawarra sporting and surf clubs

Which unit clubs usually book

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the common choice. It runs three hours and includes the CPR unit, so a volunteer who holds it is covered for both. Clubs with junior programs sometimes prefer HLTAID012, which is the education and care unit and puts more emphasis on infants and children.

Whatever your governing body or insurer specifies takes precedence over general advice — sporting codes differ, and it is worth confirming before you book a group in.

Keeping cover through the season

The practical problem for most clubs is not the initial course, it is currency. First aid is generally treated as current for three years and CPR is refreshed annually, so a club that trained everyone at once will find everyone lapsing at once.

Staggering it helps: put new volunteers through HLTAID011 as they join, and book the 1.5-hour CPR refresher for the rest each pre-season. That keeps a qualified person available year-round without a single expensive push.

What each person needs to bring

A Unique Student Identifier, which is free and only needs to be created once, and completion of the short online component beforehand. The practical session is the part that has to be done in person, and the statement of attainment is issued the same day.
